nothing

No news. Stupid panel.

Now I have to try to make it through the weekend with my future just out of reach and my husband a thousand miles away. He comes home on Monday only to leave again for good ( or at least until I join him in December/January) in two weeks if/when he gets his assignment. All I can think about is that my time with him is likely limited and I can't even be with him right now.

I'm a mess.

adventures of a freckle faced girl

The funny thing about this blog is that it's supposed to chronicle the adventures of a freckle faced girl. While I do have a plethora of freckles on my face, the truth is that I'm just not very adventurous. I mean sure, I'll drive 6 hours to visit my boyfriend (now husband) on a moments notice and I'll participate in a 200 mile relay, but I thrive in a stable environment and I'm allergic to adrenaline. I like travel, but only to destinations where the locals speak the same language as me (which is why I just got my passport last year at the age of 30). Well things are about to get (truly) adventurous up in these parts, because Mister and I are learning francais and heading to*....

Drumroll please....

Conakry, Guinea!

deep breaths, part 2

It looks like Mister will indeed be paneled this Friday. Between the email he forwarded me and a conversation he had with his career development guy, I'm guessing that the panel will end with a handshake. If I'm right, his training will begin in less than a month.

Since it's basically a done deal, I'll give you guys a hint as to where we might be headed. Well, not so much a hint, but narrow it down to one continent...Africa. He's got one bid on each the east and west coast.

I know I sound like a broken record, but I'm freaking out. This is so scary to me!

Deep breaths

Mister just told me that there is a big panel* being held on Friday for several of the folks bidding on NOW positions. If Mister is paneled, they'll look at his bids and qualifications to see which, if any, is a good fit. This means, come next week, there is a good chance we'll know what our future looks like, whether it be staying in Houston for another year (or until some other NOW positions come up worth bidding on) or moving to DC in November for training, where we'd be for three to nine months depending on whether or not he gets the French speaking post he bid on.

Oh, I hope he gets paneled on Friday. This is killing me.

bulletpoints (random thoughts and travel edition)

*The most amazing accident happened today. I grabbed my cell phone off my desk and it launched out of my hands, did a flip and landed in the side pocket of my purse, exactly where I would have put it if I didn't have butter fingers.

*Mister and I went to Richmond, VA for our friends wedding over Labor Day. The bride and groom met at our wedding last year and the rest is history. I was kind of a wreck because I had just found out my grandpa had died, but the day was lovely.

*I was a bridesmaid and may or may not have gotten my heel stuck on a little pile of dirt and stumbled my way down the aisle. Completely embarrassing.

*After Richmond we went up to Arlington for a few days. Mister and I pretty much recreated the week we met, eating at the lost dog cafe and visiting the monuments at night. The only thing we were missing was a visit to the ping pong table where we had our first kiss!

*Most everyone we know in the DC area was gone for the weekend, but we did get to hang out with our friends Erica and Ben and cousin Betsy. It was so nice to see some familiar faces. Oh how I miss DC.

*My friends here have started a dinner exchange. I have been gone the last two weekends and had completely forgotten about that. Imagine my delight when I realized I will only have to cook once this week, but have a week full of delicious meals. I'm giddy just thinking about it!

*Mister was supposed to be gone for a whole month with back to back work trips, but it's looking like he may be able to come home a few days early before leaving again. Yessssss!

*Sadly the second half will keep him out of town for his birthday which he's completely bummed about but oh do I have some tricks up my sleeve. It's going to blow his mind!

*I went to Utah the week before last for my grandpa's funeral. It was so great to spend time with my family and to hear so many stories about his very full life. He truly was an amazing guy. I'm a lucky girl to have him as my grandpa.

*I'm going to miss this house. I have very few memories of my childhood, but the ones I do include this hill. Rolling down it, and watching fireworks from it.

*The siblings are clearing out the house to get it ready to sell so we all got to go through and look for treasures. Mister took the job seriously and found some really neat things while donning his first find, this safari hat (he seriously wore it for hours), like this mink collar.

*Here's a close up. Isn't it the most disturbing thing you've ever seen?

*There really were actual treasures though. Next to the mink collar (actually there were two of them) was my grandpa's hat and dress uniform from the Army. It's so neat. I'll have to take pictures.

*Here are the girl cousins, aren't they all so pretty? I was so lucky to have so many cousins close in age. I even have one on my mom's side of the family.

*Mister may just think it's business as usual, but he has a really cool job.

*Not knowing where we'll be in the next few months (due to some outstanding NOW bids) is starting to get on my nerves. I want to make plans (like flights home for christmas) but can't. Ugh. Just tell me already!

*I found about a kabillion blogs written by people in the Foreign Service. On one hand I love hearing first hand about their experiences, but it also makes me feel like I don't really belong. I mean, they're living in exotic places (or are about to be living in exotic places, or just come back from living in exotic places) and are all interconnected and I'm just in Houston, living my normal boring life.

*One good thing about living in Houston though is Blue Bell ice cream. Their new flavor, snickerdoodle, is incredibly delicious.

*I am so happy that the fall TV season is here. I'm even happier that I have the capability of recording four shows at once on my DVR. I don't have any conflicts in my schedule, even after I added the new shows I'm interested in. Booyah!

Grandpa Scott #2

The TV station my grandpa worked for forever aired a little tribute on the news last night. How great is that?!

Grandpa Scott

I'm going "home" tomorrow to say goodbye to my grandpa Scott who passed away last Thursday. He was a wonderful person and I'm going to miss him.

Scott R. Clawson 1917 ~ 2010 Scott Romney Clawson, age 93, died September 2, 2010 in Salt Lake City, in the presence of his three children. Scott will be remembered for his devotion to his family and church; for never uttering a word in anger or saying one bad thing about another human being. His sweet sense of humor is his legacy to all who knew him. But above all his love of Agnes will live for the ages. Scott was born April 6, 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Shirley Young Clawson and Gertrude May Romney Clawson. Scott attended local schools, and four years at the University of Utah. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the British Isles from 1937-1939. Scott married Agnes Madsen in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, April 11, 1941. Shortly thereafter he was called to active duty in the Army and his division was one of the first to be shipped to the South Pacific after Pearl Harbor where his outfit participated in the New Guinea campaign. After the war he returned to KSL Radio in the Sales Department and in 1949 was one of the original founders of KSL Television. He retired after almost 45 years. His career included Production Manager, Program Director and Vice President of Programming. Beside his professional career he taught and supervised early morning LDS seminary at South High and Bryant Jr. High Schools for 28 years and taught English in a community adult education program. Scott's LDS Church service included being a guide on Temple Square, a teacher in various organizations and a ward historian. He served in various priesthood quorum presidencies, as ward membership clerk, ward executive secretary, bishop's counselor, stake Sunday School president, and on the Ensign Stake high council. Scott is survived by his three children, Bradley M. (Linda) Clawson, Cathy Brady, and S. Dennis Clawson; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grand-children, including one set of triplets and two sets of twins; and brother Grant R. (Irma) Clawson. He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes, sister Frances (Lee) Jepperson and brothers Douglas R. (Alex) Clawson and Richard R. (Dorothy) Clawson. A special thanks to Intermountain Homecare Hospice for helping Scott to fulfill his wish to stay in his home. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple on Thursday, September 9th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 10, 2010 at the LDS 20th ward (2nd Ave and G Street) at Noon, where friends may call from 11:00 a.m. Interment at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Ave. and N Streets.
